Medical travel assistance

Medical travel assistance offers you round-the-clock assistance in case of a medical emergency during your trip abroad. 

In addition to the organisation of assistance, insured services also include cost coverage for:

• Return trip, return transport or repatriation
• Transfer to a suitable hospital
• Medical treatment not covered by health or accident insurance

The insurance covers the cardholder (primary, second, additional and partner cards), their spouse or partner living in the same household and children under the age of 25 who are entitled to support, provided they live in the same household or are resident in Switzerland.

The following prerequisites must be met for the insurance to provide cover:

• A medical emergency occurs during the trip abroad.
• The insured person’s place of residence is in Switzerland.
• The trip is a private trip lasting no more than 90 days.
• The insurer is contacted immediately and consents to the measures taken.

The following maximum insured sums apply per event for World Mastercard Gold, Visa Gold and Flying Blue World Mastercard:

• Return trip and repatriation: CHF 250 000 for cardholders resident in Switzerland.
• Medical treatment: CHF 250 000 for cardholders resident in Switzerland.

The following maximum insured sums apply per event for Visa Platinum:

• Return journey and repatriation: unlimited for cardholders resident in Switzerland.
• Medical treatment: CHF 500 000 for cardholders resident in Switzerland.

The benefits are provided on a subsidiary basis to those provided by the statutory Swiss social insurance schemes (accident insurance, health insurance, etc.) and to any other supplementary insurance policies, provided that these do not fully cover the costs of emergency hospitalisation and emergency outpatient treatment. There is no policy excess.

The insurance applies to travel anywhere in the world, with the exception of the country in which the insured person is ordinarily resident.

The insurance covers serious illness, accident or death of an insured person during a trip as a supplement to the benefits included in the statutory health insurance and trip interruption insurance.

Insurance cover exists for private trips. The trip begins when the insured person leaves their place of residence, involves at least one overnight stay away from the place of residence, must comprise an outward and return journey and ends when they return to their place of residence. The maximum duration of a trip is 90 days for Silver and Gold cards or unlimited with Visa Platinum. This does not apply to services provided under the medical travel assistance. Here the maximum duration of a trip is always 90 days.

Items excluded from the insurance cover include the following:

• Illness or accident events that had already occurred at the time of booking or departing on the trip or events whose occurrence was obvious at the time of booking or departure.
• Measures and costs that were not ordered or approved.
• If, in connection with an epidemic/pandemic, the insured or a fellow traveller travelled despite advice to the contrary from the government in their country of residence or from the local authorities at the destination and falls ill with the corresponding disease.
• Costs for visual aids, medical aids and prostheses.
• Trips for the purpose of medical treatment.
• Policy excesses or excesses for statutory social insurance schemes (health insurance, accident insurance, etc.).

If a loss event occurs, the insurer (phone +41 44 283 34 18) must be contacted without delay to obtain its consent to any measures and assumption of the associated costs. The emergency call centre is available 24 hours a day.

Please submit invoices to the responsible accident or health insurance provider first.

Send the claim form and the following documents to the insurer as soon as possible:

• Health/accident insurance statements with regard to cost contribution.
