Trip cancellation insurance

You’ve been looking forward to your vacation, but shortly before you’re due to depart an emergency occurs making it impossible for you to leave as planned? With trip cancellation insurance, you are insured before the trip against unforeseen events such as illness, accidents or death (including those involving related persons or persons travelling with you). If you are unable to start your trip or can only start later, you will be reimbursed for the cancellation or rebooking costs.

The insurance covers the cardholder (primary, second, additional and partner cards), their spouse or partner or registered partner living in the same household and children under the age of 25 who are entitled to support, provided they live in the same household or are resident in Switzerland.

The following prerequisites must be met for the insurance to provide cover:

• The trip is cancelled or commenced later due to an insured event.
• The trip is a private trip lasting no more than 90 days (duration of trip unlimited for Visa Platinum).
• At least 60% of the travel costs were paid for with a Viseca credit card.

The following maximum insured sums apply per event:

• CHF 10 000: World Mastercard Silver, Visa Classic  and Visa GKB HCD Card.
• CHF 20 000: World Mastercard Gold, Visa Gold and Flying Blue World Mastercard.
• CHF 40 000: Visa Platinum

The following qualify as insured events:

• Serious illness, serious accident or death of an insured, accompanying or related person.
• Quarantine of an insured or accompanying person before the trip.
• Loss of work of an insured or accompanying person through no fault of their own.
• Impairment of the property of an insured or accompanying person at their place of residence.
• Unforeseen events on the planned travel route.
• Theft of the travel documents of an insured or accompanying person.

Insurance cover exists for private holiday trips. The trip begins when the insured person leaves their place of residence, involves at least one overnight stay away from the place of residence, must comprise an outward and return journey and ends when they return to their place of residence. The maximum duration of a trip is 90 days for Silver and Gold cards or unlimited with Visa Platinum. This does not apply to services provided under the medical travel assistance. Here the maximum duration of a trip is always 90 days.

The following qualify as related persons:

• spouse or partner
• fellow residents
• parents and step-parents
• children, step-children, foster children and adoptive children
• siblings
• carers of minors or relatives in need of care
• legal guardians and persons under guardianship
• very close friends or relatives with whom there is extensive contact.

Related persons are not insured persons and therefore do not benefit from insurance protection. However, if a trip or an event must be cancelled or interrupted due to an accident or serious illness concerning a related person, or if the event cannot be attended for this reason, this is an insured event.

An illness or accident resulting in a temporary or permanent incapacity to work or a mandatory inability to travel.

Cancellation or rebooking costs are the costs charged by the organizer if the booked trip has to be cancelled or postponed to a later date.

Items excluded from the insurance cover include the following:

• Illness or accident events that had already occurred at the time of booking or departing on the trip or events whose occurrence was obvious at the time of booking or departure.
• Events in connection with epidemics and pandemics are only insured in the event of illness of an insured person, a person travelling with the insured person or a close relative.
• Cancellation of the trip by the operator.

In the event of a claim, you are obliged to limit the damage or loss as much as possible. Please contact your travel operator immediately in order to cancel the trip. In case of illness, consult a doctor and request a detailed medical report.

Send the claim form and the following documents to the insurer as soon as possible:

• Detailed medical report with diagnosis or other evidence of the insured event
• Booking confirmation for the trip
• Confirmation of cancellation and statement of cancellation costs

No. To benefit from insurance cover, you must use a valid Viseca credit card or, as a mandatory requirement, the credit function of a valid combined payment card to pay for at least 60% of the travel costs, item, device or ticket.

Yes. If you cancel your trip for medical reasons, you will have to submit a detailed doctor’s certificate with diagnosis in order for us to assess your case.
